It's not exactly clear where the company name actually comes from: but it's true. Its first and main model became the name for a whole class of off-road vehicles and had to prove itself under terrible conditions during the Second World War. Today, under the umbrella of the Fiat-Chrysler Group there are primarily Jeep lifestyle SUVs.
